What is A5 Copy Paper? Explanation + Overview

You may have been shopping around the Internet for paper, planners, journals, notebooks, and organizers and see things like “A5” size or other sizes, including B5, A6, A4, and others.

What are these? These are international standard sizes of paper, which differ from what you’re used to seeing in the US (sizes like Letter, Half-Letter, and Legal size).

A5 Copy Paper is A5 paper (5.8″ x 8.3″) that is made with the intent to be printed on, which means that it sometimes comes pre-punched with holes to fit inside A5 ring binders.

A5 copy paper can sometimes be called A5 printer paper, A5 blank paper, or simply A5 paper.

A5 paper measures 5.8″ x 8.3″ and is very similar to half-letter size paper (5.5″ x 8.5″), only being a tad wider, but that extra bit of width makes it a lot more functional than half-letter paper.

Can you buy A5 copy paper?

It’s the Internet! You can buy virtually anything online.

In fact, we sell A5 copy paper, pre-punched to be compatible with standard 6-ring A5 binders, in both 100 GSM thickness and 160 GSM thickness, giving you the ability to really customize what you’re trying to make, whether it be a DIY planner, journal, organizer, bullet journal, whatever you want to make.

Can any printer print on A5 paper?

Sadly, no.

Not all printers support unique paper sizes, but these days most do.

Check the specifications on a listing for a printer if you’re shopping for one to make sure they support a variety of paper sizes or do a quick test with your existing printer to see if you can adjust the tray feed size.

I highly recommend the Epson Ecotank 2850 if you’re shopping for a printer.

It’s affordable, it’s got the ability to print on both sides of a sheet of paper (so you can print all of your templates in one print job), and it is the absolute cheapest printer to refill when your ink gets low, utilizing refillable tanks rather than having to buy expensive cartridges constantly.

If you’re planning to print your own templates consistently, a printer with the ability to print on both sides is key and has a simple supply of inexpensive ink.

What are paper sizes A5, A6, and A7, then?

Much like the metric system, international sizes have a very sensical approach to how they work.

A5 paper is simply a sheet of A4 paper cut in half, and A6 is a sheet of A5 paper cut in half.

As you can see, the paper starts with A1 size, then each half size down makes A2, A3, A4, A5, and so on.

One little caveat, of course, is if you’re shopping online for A6 paper, sometimes it’ll be bigger than a sheet of A5 paper cut in half. I don’t know why this is, but manufacturers seem to bend the rules regarding exact measurements, so be careful when buying paper and read the dimensions carefully.

What size is A5 refill paper?

A5 is an international size, meaning it measures in millimeters, and is 148 mm x 210 mm (which comes out to 5.8″ x 8.3″).

When buying A5 paper, be careful, as many manufacturers like to trim their A5 paper a bit narrower, down to 142mm in width, which can throw off your templates if you’re creating your planner/organizer.

Why do they do this? I’m not sure.

Make sure the paper you buy is a “true” A5 size (lucky for you, ours is).

What’s special about A5 paper size?

A5 paper is special because there are a lot of supporting products around the size.

Many bound notebooks and binders come in the A5 size, much more than you would see the half-letter size, so if you’re looking for a unique product to suit your needs, it’s likely that A5 will be the size you find what you’re looking for in.
